WASHINGTON, D.C. — U.S. Senator Ben Cardin (D-MD), a member of the Environment and Public Works Committee, introduced legislation — The Preservation and Renewal of Federal-Aid Highways Act — intended to ensure that the nation’s highways and bridges receive the appropriate maintenance and repair to ensure safety and meet America’s transportation needs.
RICHMOND, VA. — The Commonwealth Transportation Board (CTB) adopted the Fiscal Years (FY) 2012-2017 Six-Year Improvement Program (SYIP) allocating to projects almost $3 billion in additional construction funding created by Governor Bob McDonnell's transportation funding package passed by the General Assembly this year. The $10.6 billion construction program, which increased 36 percent from $7.8 billion in the FY 2011-2016 program, will enable important rail, transit, transportation management, bicycle, pedestrian, and highway projects to move forward.
WASHINGTON, D.C. — Decades of spending on new road construction and underinvestment in regular repair have left many states’ roads in poor condition, and costs to repair these roads are rising faster than many states can address them. These liabilities are outlined in a new report from Smart Growth America and Taxpayers for Common Sense, which examines road conditions and spending priorities in all 50 states and the District of Columbia. The report recommends changes at both the state and federal level that can reduce future liabilities, benefit taxpayers and create a better transportation system.
LOUISVILLE, KY. — The cost of the Ohio River Bridges Project could be reduced by at least $1.2 billion with changes such as those recommended earlier this year by Kentucky Gov. Steve Beshear, Indiana Gov. Mitch Daniels, and Louisville Mayor Greg Fischer, an in-depth analysis by the Bi-State Management Team has concluded.
WASHINGTON, D.C. — The National Conference of State Legislatures (NCSL) and the Center for Excellence in Project Finance at the American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials (AASHTO) partnered to produce a review of transportation governance and finance for all 50 states, the District of Columbia, and Puerto Rico. “Transportation Governance and Finance: A 50-State Review of State Legislatures and Departments of Transportation” focuses on transportation finance and the roles and relationships among the branches of state government that are most active in transportation issues.
