Gifford, Ph.D., a professor at the George Mason University School of Public Policy, discusses historical aspects of Virginia’s secondary roads policy, the current issues facing secondary roads in Virginia, and potential policy options for the Commonwealth’s secondary roads.

Caltrans awards its first design-build project

  FRESNO, CALIF. — Caltrans announced that it awarded its first design-build project — the State Highway 99 Chowchilla Rehabilitation Project — to Granite Construction Company. Design-build is currently being used in 32 other states. Caltrans obtained design-build authority in February 2009 with the passage of Senate Bill 4 (second extraordinary session). The legislation established a demonstration program, which allows 10 design-build projects for Caltrans and five for local transportation agencies, subject to authorization by the California Transportation Commission.

Flatiron wins California Transportation Foundation Aviation and Freeway Project of the Year Awards

  FIRESTONE, COLO. — Flatiron, one of the nation's largest transportation and infrastructure contractors, won two California Transportation Foundation (CTF) 2010 Project of the Year awards. The first award, in the Freeway/Expressway category, is for the Interstate 5 Gateway Project. The second award, in the Aviation category, is for the San Diego International Airport Taxiway "C" Rehabilitation.

West Virginia officials to celebrate opening of Mon/Fayette Expressway

 CHARLESTON, W.V. — West Virginia Transportation Secretary Paul Mattox announced completion of the Mon/Fayette Expressway and will be joined by Federal Highway Deputy Administrator Greg Nadeau as well as other federal, state, and local officials from West Virginia and Pennsylvania at a ribbon cutting celebration Monday, July 11, 2011.

$825 million allocated for 92 California highway, transit, and rail projects

 LOS ANGELES — The California Transportation Commission (CTC) allocated $825 million in new funding to 92 highway, transit, and rail projects that will strengthen California’s economy and upgrade the state’s vast transportation system. The allocations included nearly $9 million from Proposition 1B, a 2006 voter-approved transportation bond. To date, the state has allocated nearly $8 billion in Proposition 1B funds.
