Cardno TBE wins AASHTO Value Engineering Award

 CLEARWATER, FLA. — Cardno TBE along with its subconsultant AECOM, and project owner Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) District 4 were awarded the American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials (AASHTO) 2011 Value Engineering Award for the State Route 710/Warfield Boulevard project. The award in the pre-construction engineering category for projects valued at greater than $75 million was presented at the AASHTO National Value Engineering Conference in New Orleans, Louisiana, on Sept. 19.

Traffic problems tied to the economy, study says

 COLLEGE STATION, TEXAS — While traffic problems have stagnated along with the economy, an annual study suggests that too little progress is being made toward ensuring that the nation’s transportation system will be able to keep up with job growth when the economy does return. The 2011 Urban Mobility Report, published by the Texas Transportation Institute at Texas A&M University, illustrates congested conditions in 2010 on a number of levels.

ASTM to sponsor pervious concrete symposium

Intelligent compaction report delivers blueprint for better pavements

  AUSTIN, TEXAS — The Transtec Group's final report for the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) Transportation Pooled Fund (TPF) Intelligent Compaction (IC) project is the first of its kind, covering IC technologies for soils, subbase, stabilized base, and hot mix asphalt materials and conducting field reviews on all available IC vendors in the United States, including Ammann/Case, Bomag, Caterpillar, Dynapac, and Sakai.

Illinois Tollway uses helicopter LiDAR mapping for corridor surveying

 SHEBOYGAN, WIS. — AeroMetric completed 36 miles of high-accuracy mapping along I-88 for the Illinois Tollway. I-88 is undergoing a mill and resurfacing program, and the design engineers required a high-precision base map to prepare construction documents. By employing a helicopter mapping solution, AeroMetric offered the team a creative and innovative approach to transportation corridor surveying. This is the first time the Illinois Tollway has used helicopter-based high accuracy mapping LiDAR technology for a corridor survey.
