Though a dark rain cloud hovers over Missouri's transportation funding, the state's new five-year highway construction program was approved by the Missouri Highways and Transportation Commission.
Federal Highway Administrator Victor Mendez joined state and local officials to kick off the first phase of construction on the State Road (SR) 9B project near Jacksonville, Fla. The project, which has been stalled since the mid-1970s, is being funded almost completely by the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (Recovery Act).
Federal Highway Deputy Administrator Greg Nadeau and South Dakota Governor Mike Rounds broke ground on the US-18 highway reconstruction and improvement project in Oglala and Pine Ridge, South Dakota. The project had received a $10 million Transportation Investment Generating Economic Recovery (TIGER) grant, and is the first TIGER grant project in the nation to break ground.
