LaHood says no gas-tax increase while economy slumps
In this interview with the Financial Times, Transportation Chief Ray LaHood emphasized that increasing the gas-tax is not a solution right now. LaHood did take the opportunity to push alternative funding methods and "encourage the private sector."

Highway Trust Fund nearing $17 billion hole
The Highway Trust Fund (HTF), the main source of cash for the nation's highway and road work, will need injections upwards of $17 billion to cover projects through Sept. 2010. According to this WSJ report, "Lawmakers could also consider tweaking the economic-stimulus law so states could use some of their stimulus money to compensate for other budget shortfalls. In most cases, states can't use stimulus funds to compensate for budget deficits in their transportation-spending plans."

Congress shows SAFETEA-LU the cold shoulder
Or as Pete Ruane, president of the ARTBA put it in this New York Times report: "They’ve got so many fish to fry that we’re getting out in the back of the barbecue line." Even as Rep. James Oberstar (D-Minn.), chairman of the House Transportation and Infrastructure Committee, remains adamant about keeping to a timeline (what else would he do?) it appears that congressional action will be limited to a bailout of the Highway Trust Fund, followed by a temporary extension of the current transportation bill.

RADIO: Autodesk applies 'Hollywood-touch' to project plans
"The big change that happened with the stimulus money — that has never happened before — was they injected that money and they had jobs on the shelf, which all states do. So these jobs came off the shelf, but they may have been designed ten years ago," said David Fagerman, transportation specialist with Autodesk, in this NPR report about how the $2.3-billion company turns old, 700-page plans into "tidy digital blueprints."
