The 2009 International Bridge Conference
Pittsburgh hosts 'one-stop shop' for the bridge industry

By Solomon Lieberman

It’s a hometown celebration at the 2009 International Bridge Conference (IBC) — an event that’s become synonymous with summer in the City of Bridges. The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation is welcomed as the featured agency for the 26th annual conference, which returns to Pittsburgh’s David L. Lawrence Convention Center June 15–17. On the heels of a successful silver anniversary last year, and despite tough economic times, the Engineers’ Society of Western Pennsylvania strives this year to maintain the IBC’s place as the “one-stop shop for the bridge industry” by upgrading the program based on feedback from customers and attendees. These improvements include changes to the exhibit area, new workshops, new training offerings and demonstrations, and three “must-see” workshop events for contractors.

Keynote and plenary sessions
The conference begins Monday, June 15 with a keynote session including Rep. James Oberstar (D., Minn.), chairman of the Committee on Transportation and Infrastructure, and M. Myint Lwin, P.E., S.E., the director of the Office of Bridge Technology at the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA). The IBC Bridge Awards luncheon follows the keynote session, and the day closes with the featured agency session with the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation. This session will cover PennDOT’s Accelerated Bridge Program and present a number of speakers on a variety of topics including bridge problems/solutions, bridge fabrication QA/QC, 100-year life for bridges, historic bridges, and bridge inspection, to name a few.

Recognizing the importance of the North American railroads to both our economy and security, the IBC will conduct a special plenary session Tuesday morning devoted to railroad bridges. Discussion will consist of current practices related to railroad bridges, rules and regulations applicable to rail bridges, research and specification requirements, bridge management and inspection programs, and funding.

Technical presentations, workshops, and seminars
The IBC gets busy Tuesday and Wednesday with an agenda that offers three intensive, single-topic seminars, the bulk of the 17 workshops, and more than 100 technical presentations on topics including: design/build, bridge evaluation, construction, context sensitive design, long span bridges, bridge monitoring, bridge rehabilitation, bridge management, and accelerated bridge construction.

Exhibit hall
This year, more than 175 exhibitors are expected to showcase products and services at the IBC exhibition — which will take up new residence in naturally-lit Hall B of the convention center. There are also plans to add more areas to demonstrate equipment like inspection cranes, man lifts, diving inspection boats, and more. The exhibit hall is open each day throughout the conference. More information about the 2009 IBC, as well as online registration (early-bird discounts are available through May 15) and a downloadable conference brochure in PDF format, is available at www.eswp.com/bridge.

Three “must see” workshops

W-6: Detailing for Bridges
Presented by John McCaskie, Swank Co.
Bridge contractors talking to bridge contractors, owners, and designers on topics such as: rehabilitation, demolition, contractor liabilities, new frontiers, and more.

W-8: Bridge Owner Program Forum
Presented by Ronnie Medlock, High-Steel Structures
Invited owners from across the region will describe their upcoming bridge programs, as well as the latest information about responses to the stimulus package (actual or anticipated, depending upon the state of the package).

W-16: Bridge Construction Best Practices for Engineers
Presented by Michael D. Flowers, American Bridge/Fluor Enterprises, JV; Walter J. Gatti, Tensor Engineering; Brian Fenters, Rampart Hydrodemolition Services
This three-part workshop includes an update on the construction of the New San Francisco-Oakland Bay Self Anchored Suspension Bridge, and a demonstration of how states throughout the nation are using hydrodemolition for their bridge rehabilitation projects and how they can learn from one another’s methods.
