Apps to enhance interoperability
Bentley Systems Inc. launched its iWare Apps site at www.bentley.com/iware The new site provides access to Bentley’s free iWare Apps for enhanced interoperability, along with links to free training in their use and in-depth reference documentation. It also provides iWare Links to additional no-cost apps developed by other organizations that also facilitate interoperability. iWare Apps currently available include Bentley View to interact with DWG, DGN, and i-models as well as many other raster and vector formats used by infrastructure professionals.

Mobile mapping
Topcon Positioning Systems’ (www.topconpositioning.com) newest version of Field Tools for ArcPad support the latest version of ArcPad (v10.0) and Topcon’s GRS-1. The GRS-1 is a handheld mobile mapping system that addresses a variety of accuracy requirements and GIS mobile applications. The new version of Field Tools for ArcPad allows customers with ESRI ArcPad to take full advantage of GRS-1 functionality — internal modem and camera — while having access to GPS configurations such as high accuracy network RTK.

Bridge design software
Midas IT (www.midasuser.com) offers midas Civil, an integrated software solution for bridge and civil engineering that combines structural analysis capabilities with civil engineering-specific stage analysis, pushover analysis, and nonlinear time history features. The software offers bridge design and analysis for curved/straight girder, composite, segmental post-tensioning, suspension, cable-stayed, skewed slab, frame, arch, and culvert bridges with live load optimizers. According to the company, midas Civil provides tools for advanced modeling, analysis, and design for bridge engineers.

Infrastructure design suite
Autodesk (www.autodesk.com) expects to release its Autodesk Infrastructure Design Suite later this year in three editions: Standard, Premium, and Ultimate. The Standard edition includes AutoCAD Map 3D 2012, Autodesk Navisworks Simulate 2012, and AutoCAD. The Premium edition adds AutoCAD Civil 3D 2012 and Autodesk 3ds Max Design. The Ultimate edition includes all of the software in the Premium edition, with Autodesk Navisworks Manage 2012 instead of Autodesk Navisworks Simulate 2012.

Concrete pavement apps
The American Concrete Pavement Association (ACPA) released new applications for iPhone and iPad mobile digital devices. The apps, available for a nominal fee, are an extension of the ACPA online app library (http://apps.acpa.org). The current list of iPhone and iPad apps includes Area and Volume Calculator to calculate plan area and volume of material based on a pavement or subbase/subgrade layer’s thickness, width, and length; and Subgrade Resilient Modulus Calculator to estimate the subgrade resilient modulus from either a California Bearing Ratio or Resistance Value measurement.

Point cloud software
Measurement Devices Ltd. (www.mdl-laser.com) entered into an agreement with Pointools Ltd (www.pointools.com) to deliver point cloud software with every new MDL 3D laser scanner. Pointools software is used by project teams to reference and reuse point cloud models taken by 3D laser scanners. Pointools features stand-alone applications, CAD software plug-ins, and a third-party development platform for point cloud processing and visualization that, according to the company, enable point cloud model reuse across a broad range of platforms.
