Property sales generate millions for road and bridge projects

JEFFERSON CITY, MO. — A state highway property sales blitz in April generated almost $1 million for road and bridge projects, bringing the total amount received from the sale of excess property for the past fiscal year to just shy of $4.4 million. The money from the sales goes toward road and bridge projects.

"It's costly to build and maintain our highways and bridges, so every little bit helps, especially as less revenue becomes available for transportation," said Gregory Wood, Realty to Roads Project Director in MoDOT's Right of Way Division.

The department has been using a blitz marketing approach — selling multiple properties at one time — to move land it no longer needs off of its inventory and put it in the hands of people who can use it. In the most recent sale in April, MoDOT sold 15 properties. For the fiscal year, the agency has conveyed 344 parcels of land totaling 1,324 acres.

Wood said buyers are interested in the highway property for various reasons, whether it's to add to an abutting property they already own or to develop it.

Next up for sale are several closed maintenance sites throughout the state and some property near a major project under way in Kansas City — kcICON. Any proceeds generated from the sale of the kcICON parcel will go directly toward paying for the project, which is improving 4.7 miles of Interstate 29/35.
