PHILADELPHIA, PA. — Pennoni Associates announced that Lower Merion Township and Radnor Township’s Five Points Intersection Improvement project was given an Honorable Mention certificate from the Road and Bridge Safety Improvement Award program. Pennoni provided consulting engineering services for the project, which transformed the incident-prone five road intersection next to Bryn Mawr Hospital into a safe and manageable crossing.
“We are honored by this award, and thank PHIA,” said Don Cannon, director of Public Works for Lower Merion. “We would also like to thank Pennoni, who serves as our Township Engineer, for their excellent work on this project.”
The intersection of County Line Road and Bryn Mawr Avenue, commonly known in the area as the “Five Points” intersection, facilitated heavy traffic volumes associated with the adjacent hospital and daily commuter traffic. Lower Merion Township, Radnor Township, the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) and hospital owner Main Line Health joined together in a Public-Private-Partnership (P3) to come up with a solution. Pennoni was hired to implement a new design based off of a study from Bryn Mawr Hospital that provided better vehicle and pedestrian safety, accident reduction, congestion reduction, and ADA compliance for crosswalks and curbs ramps.
The completion of the project is a major component of Lower Merion Township’s land use plan for the greater Bryn Mawr area. The project’s award was presented by Pennsylvania Highway Information Association, the Pennsylvania State Association of Township Commissioners and PennDOT.
