PITTSBURGH, PA. — HDR was recently hired by the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation Engineering District to provide emergency replacement services for a bridge carrying SR 1093 over Interstate 70 in Washington County, Pa. The structure was severely damaged by an over-height truck and required immediate demolition. The nearly $3 million bridge replacement project will raise the profile grade and provide safety upgrades to the bridge’s approach roadways. Construction should be completed by July 2011.
HDR's Pittsburgh engineering team was mobilized immediately, and expedited a bid package for design-build delivery of the replacement structure. The team has served as the client agent for preparation of the contract documents, support during the advertisement period and project award, and now is performing final design reviews and consultations during construction. While preparing the bid documents, HDR provided numerous alternative geometric and structure studies to improve the new bridge’s horizontal and vertical clearance. To expedite the schedule, the HDR team initiated studies using GIS data while field survey and mapping were taking place.
