PORTLAND, MAINE, AND NORWOOD, MASS. — GZA GeoEnvironmental, Inc., a geotechnical and environmental consulting firm, is nearing completion of the first phase for the Maine Department of Transportation Veteran’s Memorial Bridge project in South Portland and Portland, Maine. GZA is the geotechnical engineer for the Reed & Reed – T.Y. Lin International Design-Build team.
Since groundbreaking in June this year, construction crews have completed an office complex and yard for the crew, an access trestle, and the installation of cofferdams from the Portland shore, as well as geotechnical instrumentation in South Portland.
On Aug. 5, work on piers 5 and 6 began on the Portland end of the bridge. Pipe pile installation and concrete seal placements are now complete at pier 5. GZA provided dynamic pile testing services for the pipe piles. Footing and shaft construction will begin on pier 5 next week along with pipe pile and seal placement on pier 6.
In South Portland, a preload program was designed by GZA to limit settlement of the new roadway. The program includes a temporary sheet pile wall to minimize the environmental impact and retain the fill, and wick drains and a preload to force the settlement to happen before the road is built. The wick drains and sheet pile wall tie back work is complete and the heavy production installation of the preload fill will be completed by the end of September.
The $63,122,000 project includes replacing an existing 2,000-foot long bridge with a new bridge carrying four automobile lanes and a bicycle lane along Route 1A over the Fore River from South Portland to Portland.
