LAUREL, MD. — Greenhorne & O'Mara Inc. (G&O) recently won three awards for Engineering Excellence from the American Council of Engineering Companies (ACEC). The Honor Awards were bestowed by the ACEC Maryland and ACEC Metropolitan Washington regional chapters. The Reconstruction of the Eastern Avenue Bridge over Kenilworth Avenue project located in the District of Columbia was also selected for an ACEC National Recognition Award.
G&O's engineering team was faced with significant obstacles prior to construction, including the fact that Kenilworth Avenue is a designated U.S. Department of Homeland Security Evacuation Route and serves as a major artery for commuters travelling between Washington D.C., and Maryland. Consequently, the new bridge required a time-efficient, cost-effective design that was flexible enough to allow all lanes of Kenilworth Avenue to remain open during rush hour.
The prefabrication techniques used by G&O’s engineering team enabled significant portions of the bridge to be constructed during off-peak hours and provided a shorter construction duration than conventional construction would have required. Because of the efficiencies provided by the prefabrication, the bridge was completed under the projected budget and on time. The accelerated construction methods employed by G&O also qualified the project to receive a $1 million grant from the Federal Highway Administration “Highways for Life” program.
Simon Simon, P.E., G&O’s corporate vice president, Structures remarked: "We're particularly proud of this project because it's a great example of G&O’s overall mission: developing intelligent, innovative solutions that leave a lasting, positive impact on our communities. This project serves as an excellent example of our mission in action.”
