DENVER — CH2M HILL recently received two Idaho Transportation Department Excellence in Transportation Awards for the East ParkCenter River Crossing Project. The two awards — recognizing outstanding initiatives in developing, planning, and implementing transportation projects throughout Idaho — were received in the Large Design and Construction categories. CH2M HILL led the consultant team on the East ParkCenter River Crossing project for the Ada County Highway District. The project, which spans the Boise River and provides a route to East Boise and the Barber Valley, will accommodate growth in east and southeast Boise. The project was recognized for its complexity, which included a new urban roadway, five bridge structures, pedestrian and bicycle paths, interconnection with utilities, wetland restoration and mitigation, irrigation ditch modifications, and integration with a local park, as well as residential and business developments. In addition, the project was noted for working within the natural environment — keeping the bridge clearance low and using railing that allows bridge users to view the river and wetlands mitigation. The project was also celebrated for its early completion, six weeks ahead of schedule.
The CH2M HILL team was challenged to apply innovative engineering techniques, materials, and equipment to protect the sensitive Boise River and surrounding wetlands, incorporate recreational opportunities, protect public safety, and offer an aesthetically pleasing bridge structure design.
