PHILADELPHIA, PA. — A joint venture of URS Corporation and Urban Engineers has been selected by the Delaware River Port Authority (DRPA) to provide construction management services for the replacement of the deck of the Walt Whitman Bridge.
The Walt Whitman, which carried 40 million vehicles last year, is the busiest and second oldest of four Delaware River toll bridges operated by the DRPA between Philadelphia and southern New Jersey. The seven-lane, 11,981-foot-long bridge opened to traffic in 1957.
The project will involve replacing the steel decking and installing parapets and a movable barrier to separate eastbound and westbound traffic. The work also will include asphalt paving, as well as electrical and communication cables, and existing drainage structures. Construction is expected to be completed in the summer of 2014 at a cost of $128 million. The total cost to build the bridge in 1957 was $86.9 million.
