NEWARK, N.J. — Michael Baker Jr., Inc., a unit of Michael Baker Corporation, was awarded a $1 million contract from the city of Newark, N.J., to make improvements to Delancy Street, a 1.1-mile roadway and drainage improvement project in the southeastern section of the Newark business district. Baker is the primary consultant providing roadway design, drainage design, utility coordination and design, lighting design, geotechnical and pavement design, permits, maintenance and protection of traffic.
“The project goal is to improve the roadway to enhance safety, performance and reliability,” said Magdy Hagag, Baker’s project manager.
Delancy Street is a major component of the Liberty Corridor, a regional port way connecting truck traffic from Route 1 and Route 9 with the city’s industrial waterfront area along Newark Bay. The Liberty Corridor will connect port and rail facilities, Newark Liberty International Airport, the major highway network in the area including Routes 1 and 9, and I-78, and the New Jersey Turnpike with warehousing/distribution centers, commercial interests and the entire industrial base of the port way region.
Several subconsultants will be assisting Baker with this project. GTS Consultants, Inc., will be completing survey right-of-way research and Matrix New World Engineering, Inc., will be completing hazard materials investigation and remedial action work plan.
