SAN DIEGO ─ Caltrans announced that construction has begun on the $90-million Interstate 805/Carroll Canyon Road Extension Project, which will help reduce congestion, provide easier access to the I-805/5 interchange, and complete a 10-mile carpool lane. The project was primarily financed ($52 million) by the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009. The project also received $14.4 million from the city of San Diego and $24.1 million from the San Diego Association of Governments. Motorists on both I-805 and Mira Mesa Boulevard experience heavy traffic congestion ─ an average of nearly 150,000 vehicles daily. The project will extend Carroll Canyon Road under I–805. A direct access ramp also will be built from Carroll Canyon Road to the bus/carpool lanes in the freeway median. The project is expected to be completed in late 2012 or early 2013.
