Baker Chosen by PennDOT for construction services on the Boston Bridge Project

PITTSBURGH — Michael Baker Jr., Inc., an engineering unit of Michael Baker Corporation has been awarded a three year, $2.3 million contract by the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) for construction inspection services for the Boston Bridge Project. This bridge spans over the Youghiogheny River in Allegheny County, Pa.

This project involves the rehabilitation of a two-lane, eight-span steel truss bridge. In addition, the project involves a steel stringer replacement, reinforcing steel floor beams with steel cover plates, insertion of Pennsylvania style barriers, rehabilitation of existing pedestrian railing, replacing the existing expansion dams and bearings, substructure repairs, approach work, and the repainting of the entire structure.

Specifically, Baker will be providing construction inspection and documentation services on this project, which is expected to start August 2010. The project poses challenges due to high traffic volumes of this bridge; however, Baker’s staff understands the need of adequate access for the businesses, attractions, and residents of the region.
